Electric Violins vs. Acoustic

Hello Everyone!
I've only ever played acoustic violins, but I'm planning on investing in an electric violin sometime soon. (I play in an alternative rock band and hope that having an electric violin will make amplification and creating effects easier...plus the possibilities offered by more than four strings.) So, can anyone out there who has played both electric and acoustic tell me about the difference in tone and quality of sound (or any other significant differences) and perhaps recommend any particular brands or makes of electric violins? Mark Wood violins look amazing...if only they weren't so expensive!
Thanks!

Just been to Middlewich Folk
Just been to Middlewich Folk & Boat Festival (wet & Muddy!) in Cheshire. Many acts had a fiddle player or three. All were using conventional acoustic violins with attached transducer pickups, at moderate volume in a marque with a few hundred people.
Not one player with a purpose built electric fiddle.Very impressed by young female player in Ashley Hutching's 'Rainbow Chasers', Ruth Angell. She looks a bit of an Angel, too! If there's an easy way of posting a photo on here of her playing, I will oblige.
