Just instrument and amp.

Has anybody thought of just working with basics? - A nice old-fashioned two-channel tube amp with spring reverb and a good semiacoustic or solidbody violin / viola should sound GREAT - if one has to use racks full of equaliziers and smoothing effects to achieve a satisfying sound, something must be wrong. On forums everybody lists up his gear - I won't carry that around every night.

I like the idea of

I like the idea of simplicity a lot. Of course you need a decent amp and a good instrument with good transducers to achieve this. It is great to have transportable gear and takes less time to set up. And of course, less gear, means that less can go wrong.

If you need extra gear to fix the sound, something is obviously wrong. If however you just like to explore the digital territory by reshaping the sond, why not?

Completely disagree...

I disagree entirely; if you're just going to run it through a tube amp with spring reverb, what's the point of even having an electric? You can get a lot better tone out of an actual acoustic violin. Personally, I play electric so I can make a ton of wacky sounds (and loop), so hauling a 5-unit pedalboard around is totally worth it. If I want a clean, "basic" tone, I'll play an acoustic violin.

Just my two cents.
