pre-amp

I am getting an electric violin soon and was curious is to if i needed a pre-amp and what does it do exactly? Does it matter what kind i get? What would you recommend for the type of strings? I have looked for more info on electric violins, specifically the yamaha EV-205 but couldn't really find anything. If you have more info that would be great. thanks!

A preamp "matches" the impendance of the violin pickup with the impendance of the amplifier. It actually mathes the signal of the pickup to the requirements of the sound system. You de need a preamp to get your sound ok, in most cases.

In case of the Yamaha EV-205, I think a preamp is built-in, powered by a 9 Volt battery. In this case you don't need a separate preamp.

Strings: it is best to follow the guidelines of the manufacturer. It may depend on the instrument, and in particular on the type of pickup. I use Thomastic Superflexible.

Good luck!

Good pre-amps also change

Good pre-amps also change the tone of the signal inputted into them. Like a nice tone control. Most are aimed at reducing the piezo 'buzz' that most electric violins have (due to using piezo transducers for the pickup).
